Bitcoin’s 115% Year-to-Date Surge Places 2024 Among its Top 5 Years of the Decade

Bitcoin’s 2024 performance has been marked by impressive resilience and milestones that reflect its growing maturity as a financial asset. The long-awaited approval of multiple spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States, advancements in blockchain technology, increased crypto regulations, inflation fears and currency devaluation in some regions, which reinforced Bitcoin’s appeal as a hedge asset, sparked a surge in institutional interest, driving significant price gains and turning 2024 into one of the best years for Bitcoin growth.

According to data presented by CryptoPresales.com, Bitcoin’s 115% year-to-date surge places 2024 among its top five years of the decade.

Seven of the Last Ten Years Saw Bitcoin’s Price Surge with Triple- or Double-Digit Growth

Although security risks and price volatility make investing in Bitcoin risky, the world’s largest and most expensive crypto has performed quite well over the past ten years. Despite all the challenges and macroeconomic uncertainties, Bitcoin has had seven out of ten good years, with double and triple-digit price gains.

According to CoinMarketCap data, 2017 remains the record year for Bitcoin growth, with an impressive 1,566% annual return, far more than any other year in the past decade. Although far below this figure, 2020 brought just as impressive 433% price gain, ranking as the second-best year for the world’s number one crypto. Statistics show 2023 and 2016 hold third and fourth place, with 153% and 141% year-over-year returns, respectively. Although Bitcoin’s 115% year-to-date return is below all these figures, it still ranks 2024 as the fifth-best year for investing in BTC in the past decade.

The CoinMarketCap data also showed that Bitcoin had only three negative years since 2014, with double-digit price drops. That year alone, Bitcoin’s price plunged by 61% amid the bear market due to the Mt. Gox collapse and regulatory uncertainties. The second double-digit price drop occurred four years later, with Bitcoin’s price falling by 76% amid the bear market after the 2017 bubble burst. The macroeconomic tightening and crypto market collapse in 2022 brought the third hit in the past decade, causing the BTC price to plunge by 61%.

Investing $10K in BTC a Decade Ago Would Make You a Millionaire Today

With seven out of the last ten years bringing double, triple, and quadruple-digit price gains, Bitcoin’s price skyrocketed by a whopping 9,900% in a decade. Since 2014, the price of the world’s largest crypto has soared from roughly $900 to over $90,000, bringing impressive returns to investors.

Assuming an investor bought $10,000 worth of BTC in January 2014, they would have picked up 11 coins priced at around $900. Five years later, in January 2019, Bitcoin’s price soared to over $4,000, turning the initial investment into $44,000. Thanks to impressive price gains in 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2024, that $10,000 would eventually turn into nearly one million dollars as of last week.
