Crypto Adoption Slips in Three of the World’s Five Biggest Markets in 2025

After nearly a decade of rising crypto adoption, with people worldwide embracing digital assets for investment and payments, the crypto hype is cooling off in 2025. Many major markets that once fueled this growth are now experiencing declining adoption rates.

According to data presented by CryptoPresales.com, crypto adoption has dropped in three of the five largest crypto markets, including the United States, India, and Brazil.

India and Brazil Record 5% Decline Over Two Years, While U.S. Crypto Usage Drops 3%

Last year, over 850 million people worldwide used cryptocurrencies for investment and payments, eight times more than just four years before that. However, the market projections for 2025 are not that shiny, showing major stagnation and even crypto adoption drops in some major markets, including the United States, Brazil, and India.

Growing regulatory uncertainty, market fatigue, and investor caution have caused crypto adoption to slip in these three countries. In India and Brazil, tighter government rules and fewer benefits for using crypto have slowed the momentum, while in the U.S., changing policies and growing interest in safer options like ETFs have cooled the market. After years of explosive growth, many users are now taking a wait-and-see approach, leading to a clear slowdown in everyday crypto activity.

The Statista Consumer Insights survey showed that around 16% of Americans used cryptos for investments and payments in 2023. That figure has now dropped to 13%, marking a 3% decline over two years. Former crypto hotspots India and Brazil have seen even bigger declines in adoption.

Despite the government’s historically negative attitude toward the sector, India has seen a significant rise in crypto investors over the years. In 2023, around 27% of surveyed Indians reported using cryptocurrencies, but this figure has dropped sharply. The latest data shows a 20% crypto adoption rate in the country, or 7% less than two years ago, highlighting the scale of the slowdown. Brazil followed a similar path, with its adoption rate falling by 5% to 23% between 2023 and 2025. France also saw a decline, but its adoption rate slipped by only 1% in the same period.

United Kingdom and South Africa are Among the Fastest Growing Crypto Adopters

But these four countries don’t tell the whole story. While the U.S., India, Brazil, and France have all seen crypto adoption decline, the other four countries in the Statista survey experienced growth over the past two years.

Although crypto adoption was once seen as a mainly non-Western trend, three of these countries are major global economies. The latest data show the United Kingdom now has around 16% of crypto users, a notable 4% increase in two years. Germany follows with a 2% increase and 14% of crypto users as of this year. Even the crypto-restrictive China saw its adoption rate grow by 1%, hitting 11% this year.
