The crypto market had a wild ride in the first half of 2025, marked by new regulations, sharp price swings, and massive volatility. This perfect storm of events has had a significant impact on low-value assets, causing the worst cleanup since the 2022 crash. According to data presented by CryptoPresales.com, a total of 1,343 cryptocurrencies were delisted between January and July.
The Worst Coin Drop on the Record
The latest cryptocurrency wipeout comes as a huge shock after last year’s rally, which triggered a wave of new coin launches. In 2024 alone, nearly 1,500 new coins and tokens were listed on the crypto market, marking the highest single-year increase since the 2021 boom. This pushed the total number of cryptocurrencies to a record 10,700 in January 2025. However, shortly after reaching that all-time high, the number of cryptos plunged like never before.
Regulatory challenges, global macroeconomic concerns, and Donald Trump’s trade policies have shaken up the crypto space, causing a huge crash of low-value coins, and Investing.com data show just how big that plunge was. By the end of March, the number of cryptocurrencies slipped to 10,531, showing a 200 drop in two months. Still, that was nothing compared to what followed in April. That month alone, 583 coins were delisted from the market, marking the worst monthly cleanup of 2025.
Over the next two months, another 284 tokens were delisted from the market, with the year-to-date loss rising to 1,064. But the negative trend didn’t stop there, with July bringing another 279 drop, and the total number of delisted coins rising to 1,343.
To put this into perspective, the 1,343 delistings in the seven months of 2025 far outpace the previous record set during the 2022 crash. According to Investing.com data, the number of cryptos plunged by around 400 between February and August that year, while the full-year decline hit over 1,100, or 20% less than in the seven months of this year.
Over 98% of All Cryptocurrencies are Worth Less than a Dollar
Despite this major wipeout, the number of cryptocurrencies in circulation remains high, 9,385 as of last month. And while many investors chase the dream of discovering or launching the next Bitcoin or Ethereum, most of these coins hold little to no real value.
The CryptoPresales analysis showed that 98% of all coins circulating in the crypto space are worth less than a dollar. Only 49 are valued at over $100, and just 19 are more than $1,000. This small group of high-value coins continues to dominate the market in both value and usage. According to CoinMarketCap, the top ten highest-valued digital coins accounted for 91% of the total crypto market value last week, or 5% more than just six months ago.
